British commanders and politicians saw MacArthur as reckless, egotistical, and dangerously independent. When he pushed UN forces to the Yalu River, Britain feared he would trigger a wider war with China—and even the Soviet Union.
 
Matters escalated when MacArthur openly contradicted U.S. policy, suggested using nuclear weapons, and called for expanding the war. By the time Truman fired him in April 1951, the House of Commons literally cheered. One British diplomat even called him a “mad satrap” trying to run his own war.
