Esmeralda was born with a very rare disorder called Antisynthetase Syndrome and was in dire need of a lung transplant. Her doctors at Phoenix Children's Hospital decided to send her to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio for the lung transplant.
When she arrived at Nationwide Children's, the lung transplant team put her on Ambulatory ECMO. Ambulatory ECMO is different from regular ECMO in that a patient is able to be conscious, awaken, move around and actively participate in their care and rehabilitation.
In Esmeralda's case, she was able to walk, ride a stationary bike and even participate in a swallow study. Because she was on Ambulatory ECMO and was able to take part in her care, she was able to get stronger in preparation for her lung transplant.
She was listed for a lung transplant less than a week after completing the evaluation, and she had the actual transplant two weeks after being listed. The operation was successful and now Esmerelda is back at home in Phoenix recovering quickly.
