South Sea Islands (1967)

The story opens with various shots of a Pan Am aircraft coming in to land at American Samoa's airport. Various shots of the vehicles bringing the landing steps. Legs are seen passing by. There is a long shot of the beautiful tropical harbour at Pago Pago. A girl tourist dives into a hotel pool and tourists are served drinks. There are grass thatched huts nearby. A tourist couple head for the water at the beach. In Tahiti there is a display of Tahitian dancing with girls in hula grass skirts, inter cut with shots of tom tom drums, and primitive hollow tube instruments. A male dancer does some great knee shaking and the girls wriggle their hips in the traditional hula dance. (01:03:43)



French influence on the island of Tahiti is shown by the French flag and the sign for the town hall ' Mairie', the Champs Elysees cafe, gendarme style police officers in uniform, and a boy carrying baguettes. This is seen in the capital, Papeete. A local fisherman hands fish from his boat to the harbour, followed by street scenes with 'China Town', markets and people of all ages on mopeds and scooters, known as velo's. No crash helmets in French Polynesia!



The visit then moves on to a boat trip from Tahiti to Moorea, where there are native style grass huts on the tourist resort beach. A man goes snorkelling in clear water by the beach and gets a shell. A beautiful local girl with a red flower in her hair and a modern yellow bikini and mini sarong skirt, gets into a canoe. She and her male companion are seen launching off and canoeing out from the beach into idyllic blue waters. The story closes with a point of view shot from the back of a boat - showing the natural beauty of the island landscape behind.
