So you are training hard, you are suffering through intervals, but your time trial performance isn’t improving.
So, what is holding you back? Here are a few common reasons:
1. Your Position Is Holding You Back. Aero is everything. If your position isn’t dialed in, you’re leaving free speed on the table. A proper bike fit can make a massive difference.
2. You’re Ignoring Pacing. Blasting out of the gate only to fade halfway through? TT success is all about controlled effort. Learn to pace based on power, heart rate, or perceived effort.
3. Lack of Specific Training. If you’re only doing group rides or general endurance work, you’re not training your body for sustained high power in an aero position. Long threshold efforts are key to improving over duration and accepting pain.
4. Neglecting Aerodynamics. Loose clothing, an unoptimized helmet, or poor body position all add drag. Small changes, and often inexpensive, can lead to big gains in speed.
5. Mental Toughness Needs Work. TT is as much, or more, a mental game as it is physical. Training your brain to embrace discomfort and stay focused can be the difference between a good effort and a great one.
If you’re serious about getting faster, dial in your position, stay out of the horns, train specifically, and execute with precision.
