According to advaita Vedanta, your true nature, atma, is pure, unchanging consciousness (chit, chaitanya), the awareful witness (sakshi) of all your thoughts, emotions, and perceptions. As such, your consciousness remains unaffected by the mental activities (vritti) it reveals, like the sun remains unaffected by what it shines about. Gaining self-knowledge (atma jnana) through the teachings of Vedanta, you can realize that you are ok even in the presence of sadness.
