Port William is a cute little fishing village in the southern part of Dumfries & Galloway, in Wigtownshire, on the shores of Luce Bay. The original settlement was known as Killantrae in Scottish Gaelic, meaning "church on the seashore" and was probably founded shortly after St. Ninian's arrival at nearby Whithorn in the late 4th century. Killantrae was eventually swept away by the intercession of Baron Sir William Maxwell of the House of Monreith and in the 18th century a new village with a good harbour was built in 5 years and named Port William. So this settlement is a good example of a planned village where a harbour for the convenience of the landlords was one of the first in western Galloway.
