Elbert Wibel was born on June 26, 1899 in Peru, IN to Oliver P. and Carrie Minerva (Paul) Wibel.
At around the age of 10, Wibel came to Wabash when his father, a woodworker, decided to relocate. Educationally he would eventually attend all the schools in Wabash except the East Ward Elementary. Once he reached eighth grade, he got hungry for money and quit, going to work at the Cardinal Cabinet Company making .35¢ an hour.
In 1926 Wibel left the cabinet company and went to work for Honeywell. Starting at .45¢ an hour in the OD motor department, he would work at Honeywell’s until he retired.
Wibel spends a large part of this audio interview discussing his work at Honeywell’s, the working conditions there, and how he got his family through the Great Depression. Following this he discusses work and life during the Second World War and after.
Elbert Wibel married Mary M. Feirabend on April 15, 1923. Together they would have one son, Richard, who passed away in 1962. Mary would pass away in January, 1968.
Elbert Wible 91, passed away on September 23, 1990 in Wabash, IN and was laid to rest in Falls Cemetery, Wabash, IN.
This audio interview was recorded on May 29, 1974 by George Dingledy as part of the Wabash Carnegie Public Library Oral History Project.
From 1970 to 1987 Wabash Carnegie Public Library and members of the community worked on an Oral History Project that interviewed multiple people in Wabash. These were recorded on cassette tapes, which were later converted to digital.
