Qatar FIFA World Cup to use 'transportable' stadium

Some matches at this year's 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar are to be staged in a specially designed stadium that can be dismantled and reassembled wherever needed.
The stadium, designed by architects based in Spain, is modular and mostly made from disused shipping containers.

STORY-LINE:
This is Stadium 974, thought to be the first-ever FIFA World Cup stadium which can be dismantled and then reassembled anywhere in the world.
It has been built and paid for by this year's World Cup host nation Qatar.
It's called 974 because the number is the international dialing code for Qatar (+974), as well as being the exact number of shipping containers used in the stadium's construction.
The concept of the stadium was designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architects, based in the Spanish capital Madrid.
The concept of sustainability is at the core of the stadium's, says Mark Fenwick, one of the partners in the architectural practice:
"We really felt that it wasn't really necessary for Qatar to have this eighth stadium after the World Cup," he says.
"So, we decided to take a very radical strategy, which was to see if we can actually design the stadium which is not only dismantle-able, but was also transportable, and re-mountable in another country, either as a full stadium, or as different pieces which could be put together as a variable amount of sports buildings."
The sustainability argument has been disputed though. Some argue Qatar would achieve more environmental benefits if the stadium's vital air conditioning units and other utilities were powered by renewable energy, rather than fossil fuels.
The stadium has a capacity of 40,000 spectators and is built according to a modular design, using recycled shipping containers.
Fenwick believes the ingenuity lies in its simplicity:
"Basically, what we did is we had a structure, we placed the shipping containers on this structure, where they are needed on different levels, and then we just plug and play, which is to plug them in electricity, or any other utilities, and the stadium works in this, I think very spectacular, unique idea," he says.
"Qatar has the first ever dismantle-able and re-mountable stadium in the world history of football."
Stadium 974 is set to be dismantled after the 2022 FIFA World Cup which is expected to begin in Qatar on November 21 and conclude on December 18.
The tournament is usually staged around June and July, but extreme heat in the country during those months led to it being held in winter.
Although the stadium will be dismantled, Fenwick believes there's an opportunity for a lasting legacy:
"It is the ultimate legacy achievement, which basically is that the stadium will be dismantled, will be put into the shipping containers and they will be taken on a ship, and they can be taken to another country and remounted and what would be fantastic, personally, is that it would be in the next World Cup, and that the stadium would then be on another location, across the ocean, in another World Cup," he says.
Whether that comes to fruition remains to be seen.
Qatar says the stadium will be donated to under-developed nations who wish to use it.
The stadium was tested out during the FIFA Arab World Cup which Qatar hosted in November-December last year.
