This beautiful, do-it-all sinker mahogany and Swiss moon spruce OM from Jeff Jewitt has a very compelling story behind it! In 2019, Jeff sourced some sinker mahogany from a seller who was dredging the Hudson River and pulling out sunken logs. Through some research, Jeff and a fellow luthier believe the logs were part of a mill pond for a defunct sawmill called "Ichabod T. Williams & Sons". The Williams family was involved with the lumber industry as far back as 1838, and by the early 1900s, the two sons of Ichabod were running the business. Further research indicated that this sawmill specialized in supplying mahogany to the United States, most of which went into furniture, but they also sold to all the guitar companies, including Martin, for many years. One of the many receipts in the Martin archives shows that they supplied the mahogany for the “Golden Era” of Martin production during the 1930s. Ergo, it's likely this guitar sports mahogany harvested from the same region and at the same time as those coveted Martins!
Whatever the case may be, if you're after a beautifully crafted mahogany OM, this one should be on your list. Swiss moon spruce with a slight bearclaw provides excellent warmth and treble sweetness, while the slight V neck provides easy playability.
