David Kennedy is considered one of the most influential international legal scholars of recent years. He is the Manley O. Hudson Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Institute for Global Law and Policy at Harvard Law School, where he teaches international law, international economic policy, legal theory, law and development, and European law. He is the author of numerous articles and books on international law and global governance. His research draws on interdisciplinary materials from sociology and social theory, economics, and history to explore issues of global governance, development policy, and the nature of professional expertise. He is best known for his books The Dark Sides of Virtue: Reassessing International Humanitarianism (2004), Of War and Law (2006), and A World of Struggle: How Power, Law, and Expertise Shape Global Political Economy (2016). In this seminar, David Kennedy will speak about his latest book Of Law and the World: Critical Conversations on Power, History, and Political Economy (with Martti Koskenniemi, 2023).

This event is part of the ‘Critical Legal Talks Series’, an international collaboration between the QMUL Law Department, the IHSS, CEILA, and the Group of Critical Studies in Politics, Law and Society (PoDeS) at the University of Buenos Aires. The Series attempts to problematise the law and legal institutions from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective and provide a platform for discussion around global (in)justice for researchers aiming to bridge the Global North/South divide.
