The Daniel Weltlinger Quartet is led by the internationally renowned Australian born, Berlin based violinist, composer and producer Daniel Weltlinger (Lulo Reinhardt Latin-Swing Project/Karsten Troyke) and features pianist Uri Gincel (Bonaparte), bassist Paul Kleber (Jazzanova) and drummer Mathias Ruppnig (Scopes featuring Tony Tixier). The conceptual idea behind this ensemble is primarily focused on original compositions and improvisations based on real situational stories, using any and all variety of musical influences necessary to vividly describe these stories.
The debut album of this project - ‘Szolnok’ - released on the 3rd of May 2019 on DMG Germany and Rectify Records - tells the story of Weltlinger’s violin from Szolnok that he inherited from his Hungarian born grandfather, who had carried this instrument with him when he walked between 1920-1922 by foot from Hungary to France. The violin survived being carried to the far reaches of the globe, and was brought back to Europe in late 2017 after some 75 years absence from the continent. This highly unusual and deeply personal album, recorded at Blackbird Studios in Berlin, mixes elements of jazz, free improvisation, Classical and folk influences, as well as songs Weltlinger’s grandfather performed on the violin. The album follows the historical line of this instrument and it's whereabouts until the present day, and represents a story about time, continuity and most importantly about moving forward.
'The name of this track on the album is '2018' because it was recorded several times in that year both at the studio and several months later when I made a field recording in Wedding, Berlin. I used the field recording as an introduction to the piece with the sound of church bells in the distance, kids playing in the playground and birds to symbolise time. What this piece really about is the moment. So the name actually is whatever the time that this piece happens to be played in at any given moment. '2018' is a reflection of the present and is thoroughly modern in conception combining thematic motifs from throughout the album most notably the main ‘walking’ riff from the 1921 track. I live today in Berlin and the violin from Szolnok is still going strong. The 2018 track is about the concept of continuation and moving forward from the past by living in the now, and for a better future today in the 21st century.'
