Original comments: "This was John McLaughlin's post 80's Mahavishnu musical outlet, and he'd continue playing in this format into the early 90's. By the time of this show, Jonas Hellborg was no longer regularly collaborating with John. Post Hellborg, McLaughlin briefly worked with the great Jeff Berlin, before entering into lengthier collaborations with Kai Eckhardt and Dominique DiPiazza. Berlin isn't on any of the commercially released McLaughlin Trio albums, but there are a few good sounding boots with him that circulate. The other constant in this McLaughlin Trio, besides John, was master percussionist Trilok Gurtu. Gurtu was doing double duty in those days by also being a part at that time of the band Oregon. Definitely nice for him to have had those 2 options going side by side.
There is an appearance by John with Gil Evans from this festival in Ravenna in 1988, so it's certainly possible that happened in connection with John also appearing there as a headliner. Mags' share had the date July 7th which has been confirmed via AI and is highly likely. This share was newly tracked in Audacity. Audacity's EQ and Mastering tool set was also very lightly applied to enhance the clarity of this already fine recording. My disc (and seemingly mag's as well) consisted of 2 tracks that were unidentified. Are You the One and Mother Tongues were a single lengthy track, and it's possible that another composition is tucked inside Are You the One. That track had originated on Johnny McLaughlin Electric Guitarist in the post Shakti late 70's, and Florianapolis had come from the 80's Mahavishnu Adventures in Radioland. Mother Tongues was then new, and made its first appearance on the Trio's first official release Live at The Royal Festival Hall, November 27, 1989. Here's hoping that many might find this under-circulated McLaughlin Trio show with Berlin and Gurtu enjoyable."
Thanks to the dynamic duo, jswetch & goody!
