In 1755, the Battle of the Monongahela (Braddock’s Defeat)
Washington served under British General Edward Braddock. French forces and their Native American allies ambushed the British column.
Arrows and gunfire rained down. Washington had two horses shot out from under him. Four bullet holes were later found in his coat—yet he was not wounded. Many accounts note Native warriors firing both muskets and arrows during the chaos of the ambush.
Washington believed his survival was divine protection, shaping his lifelong sense of calling and humility before God.
Native warriors later reportedly said he seemed “protected by the Great Spirit,” as they had clear shots but could not fell him.
