This video features all five presentations from an incredible night of learning, collaboration, and growth at the 2026 BGRA Coaching Clinic.
Coaches from across the area shared their philosophies, drill progressions, practice structures, and culture-building strategies that have helped shape some of the top high school programs in Illinois.
Presentations Include (in order):
Terry Beyna – Saint Viator High School
Hitting Development
Based on “The 6 Essentials of Hitting” (Lower Half Load, Stride Separation, 50/50, Ground-Up Swing, Straight Line Path, Maintain Balance)
Terry walks through swing progression, contact points, balance, and how to simplify instruction for players. He emphasizes limiting mechanical talk during competition and focusing on one or two key adjustments at a time.
Bill Montemayor & Kevin Miller – Buffalo Grove High School (District 214)
Pitching & Catching Systems
Buffalo Grove’s pitching principles include:
• Command the Zone
• Control the Run Game
• Disrupt Timing
• Be an Athlete
• Control the Controllables
They detail throwing progressions, slope bullpens, timed bullpens, “Play the String,” and competitive run-game drills like the Frog Drill.
Kevin Miller – Catching Development
Pre-Drill and Pre-Game Routines
Dynamic warm-ups, hip mobility, activation drills, and structured routines before catching off the mound. Key focus areas include:
• Pre-Pitch Roll
• Quarter Turn (inside pitch)
• Hand Flip (low pitch)
• Target Relax Stick
Chris D’Amato – Stevenson High School
Building Program Culture
Centered around Stevenson’s pillars:
• Discipline
• Intensity
• Relentless
• Team
Chris dives into mission, identity, energy-transferring behaviors, attitude control, and daily standards. Key themes include:
• Character over talent
• Dominate your daily plan
• Winning vs. Learning
• Self-audit your team and yourself
Jason Wieder – Wheeling High School (District 214)
Effective Practice Planning
Jason closes the clinic by breaking down how to build high-energy, efficient practices by asking three critical questions:
1. What are we about (Identity)?
2. What does time, space, and personnel look like today?
3. What do we want to get out of this practice?
He shares full practice templates, dynamic warm-up and throwing programs, defensive rotations, TCU situational hitting circuits, pitching build-up plans, and strategies to keep practices competitive and engaging.
Across all five presentations, a consistent message emerged: preparation, purpose, accountability, and culture drive performance.
Huge thank you to Terry Beyna, Bill Montemayor, Kevin Miller, Chris D’Amato, and Jason Wieder for volunteering their time and knowledge to pour into the coaching community.
