Devi Choudhurani – some call her a robber, some call her the savior of the poor. But her name shines in the history of Bengal as the first female revolutionary of undivided Bengal. Even after more than 350 years, people of North Bengal still remember her and her mentor Bhabani Pathak with love and respect.
In this video, we share with you both history and travel. We will first talk about the story of Devi Choudhurani, and then take you to three historical temples in Jalpaiguri which are directly or indirectly connected with her and Bhabani Pathak.
✨ Who was Devi Choudhurani?
When we look back at history, we see the names of brave women like Rani Rashmoni, Rani Lakshmi Bai, and Matangini Hazra. But often, the name of Devi Choudhurani is not spoken about. She was one of the earliest women rebels in Bengal’s history.
In the 18th century, after the death of Shiv Chandra, the landlord of Rangpur (now in Bangladesh), his wife Jaydurga took responsibility of the zamindari. She came to be known as Devi Chaudhuri. For the poor farmers, monks, fakirs, and common people, she was like a goddess.
At that time, Bengal saw many revolts – the monk rebellion, fakir rebellion, and peasant movements. Devi Choudhurani fought side by side with Bhabani Pathak, Majnu Shah, and other leaders. Together, they fought against the British colonial forces, protecting the poor and oppressed.
While most women of that era stayed within the walls of their homes, Devi Choudhurani stood out as a fearless rebel leader. It is believed that before going on expeditions or raids, she and her followers worshipped Kali Maa. For this reason, many temples of Kali Maa in the Baikunthapur forest area of Jalpaiguri are said to be connected with her and Bhabani Pathak.
🛕 Our Visit to the 3 Temples of Devi Choudhurani in Jalpaiguri
1️⃣ Dhumdangi Temple (Ramakrishna Mission, Jalpaiguri)
Our first stop was at a beautiful temple in the middle of a tea garden in Dhumdangi. The temple is now run by Ramakrishna Mission, but local history says it was originally built under the guidance of Devi Choudhurani and Bhabani Pathak.
2️⃣ Shikarpur Devi Choudhurani & Bhabani Pathak Temple
Our next stop was at Shikarpur Tea Garden, where we found a temple with a deep history. This temple was first established by Darpadeb Raikat, a descendant of the Baikunthapur royal family. Later, it was rebuilt in 1871 during the reign of Raja Yogendradev Raikat.
During the Great Bengal Famine of 1776, British officers oppressed the local farmers. Leaders like Bhabani Pathak and Majnu Shah fought against them, with full support from Devi Choudhurani and the Raikat family.
This temple was tragically burned in 2018, but later rebuilt by the West Bengal Government with care. Today it still stands as a proud symbol of Bengal’s rebel history.
3️⃣ Devi Choudhurani Temple near Goshala More
Our last stop was at a very old temple near Goshala More. The temple complex has ancient walls and structures that carry the mark of 350+ years of history.
Every corner of this place whispers untold stories of Devi Choudhurani and Bhabani Pathak.
