In this famous 1907 paper, J. Ellis McTaggart argues that time is unreal. In doing so, he introduces the extremely influential distinction between the A-series and the B-series, that is, between talking about time in terms of future and past, and talking about time in terms of earlier and later. The latter, but the former, seems compatible with a static, 4-dimensional universe.
