Title: Search for solutions to Foundations on Black cotton soils of India
Abstract:
One of the major regional deposits of India is black cotton soil, covering an area of about 300, 000 sq km, approximately 2/5 of our country. By the very nature of this soil, in view of the presence of the clay mineral montmorillonite, which causes high swelling and shrinking, these soils are difficult to deal with as a foundation material and of course they are unfit to be used as construction material, without treatment. The paper first reviews the fundamental understanding of these soils from clay-water-electrolyte interaction view point, geotechnical haracterization as well as chemical treatment by way of lime, fly ash, cement and other hydraulic binder view point.
With the advent of geosynthetics, the solutions available are found to have wider application in highway pavements, railway tracks and embankments. Successful use has been made of by way of basal reinforcement principles both by geocells as multi-layer solutions. These have been presented in detail.
Finally, the use of conventional lime-fly ash treatment as well as geosynthetic solutions offer a great variety of options, which could be cost effective both in the short term as well as long term.
