A powerful arm swing will help the athlete take a more explosive stride. And increasing arm drive frequency can contribute to a faster stride, which means they will run faster (stride length + stride frequency = speed).
By having the athlete start in the half-kneeling stance, you're eliminating two joints they could otherwise rotate (ankles and knees). This allows them to focus more on driving their arms without having to coach against rotation (with the exception of excessive rotation at the torso during the arm drive).
Once the athlete has mastered the arm drives in the half-kneeling stance, they can move to the standing position. All arm motion should happen from front to back, with elbows flexed at 90 degrees at the front and rear position. Hands should be open or loosely cupped and upper body should be relaxed.
