Why the U.S. Has TWO New Yorks and TWO Washingtons?

Everyone knows New York City and its famous boroughs, but not everyone realizes that the city is actually part of a state called New York.
To avoid confusion, the city is officially called New York City. Interestingly, the city covers only about 1% of the state’s territory, yet it’s home to around 40% of its entire population. Despite the huge importance of New York City, the state capital is actually Albany.

A similar situation happens with Washington. This is Washington, the capital of the United States and home to the world-famous White House. But on the opposite side of the country, in the far northwest, there’s the state of Washington, whose capital is Olympia.

To distinguish between the two, the city is officially called Washington, D.C., which stands for Washington, District of Columbia.
