📍 The Homer Tunnel - An engineering masterpiece!
The tunnel stretches for 1.2km through solid granite mountain and is about 945 meters above sea level. The work for tunnel started in 1935 with just 5 men. It took around 19 years to built the tunnel. The only road access to Milford Sound is via this tunnel.
The view on exiting the tunnel is breathtaking with Milford Road winding its way down into the valley between massive snow capped cliffs. You are almost guaranteed to see cheeky Kea (NZ Alpine Parrot) on exiting the tunnel towards milford.
