Driving Into a Sandstorm in Marrakech | Our Journey from the Ourika Valley
While on holiday in Marrakech, Morocco, Heather and I took a trip to the stunning Ourika Valley. On our return journey, as we traveled along the P2017 highway, I noticed a dark cloud forming on the horizon. At first, I thought it was a rainstorm—but as we got closer, it became clear that we were heading straight into a sandstorm.
A local we spoke to mentioned that sandstorms in Marrakech are rare, typically occurring only a couple of times a year. However, this was already the second sandstorm of the summer, a sign of changing conditions.
In this video, I’ve put together a montage of clips capturing our drive as we approached the outskirts of Marrakech, experiencing the sandstorm firsthand.
The Impact of Sandstorms:
Sandstorms are caused by strong winds in arid regions with little or no vegetation. They have serious effects on air and water quality, impacting people, animals, and the environment. Shockingly, around 25% of sandstorms are triggered by human activities such as deforestation and soil depletion, contributing to desertification.
