The Liga Portugal is the highest football league in Portugal's football system. Until 1999, the league had the name Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão and was then changed to its current name Primeira Liga.

Between the 1921/22 and 1937/38 seasons, the championship of Portugal was played as a cup competition. Between 1934/35 and 1937/38, a was also played as a regular league. However, the champion of this competition did not become national champion, but league champion. From season 1938/39, the regular league determines the national champion and there is a separate cup competition: Taça de Portugal. The national champion plays against the winner of the cup tournament (or the cup finalist in case the double is won) for the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.

In 2021, the league was named number six strongest national league in the world and fifth strongest in Europe.
