President Donald Trump’s administration has announced that the United States will pause the processing of immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries around the world. This policy will take effect on January 21, 2026, and it means that people from those countries who are trying to move permanently to the U.S. will not have their visas issued while the suspension is in place. The pause is part of a broader effort by the U.S. government to tighten immigration rules and screening procedures.
The U.S. State Department says the move is aimed at reducing the number of immigrants it believes might rely on public welfare or government benefits after arriving in the United States. Officials describe this as an effort to protect American taxpayers and ensure immigrants are financially self-sufficient.
This pause applies only to immigrant visas — the kinds of visas people apply for if they plan to live in the U.S. permanently. It does not affect short-term visas like tourist, business, or student visas, which will continue to be processed.
The policy covers countries from many regions including parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Some examples include Pakistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Iran, Russia, Nigeria, and Afghanistan. However, India is not on the list. Dual nationals who hold valid passports from countries not on the list are generally exempt from the pause.
Critics of the decision say the action will sharply restrict legal immigration and could harm families and workers seeking to contribute to U.S. society. Supporters argue it strengthens immigration controls and focuses on national interests.
