Duke Ellington's 1956 performance at the Newport Jazz Festival revived the big-band legend's career. And it rocks. This video goes deep into the story behind one song every rock'n'roll fan should have in their collection: the 14-minute "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" featuring a six-and-a-half-minute sax solo by Paul Gonsalves. That's longer than any rock solo you'd hear on the radio, including Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" or Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freedbird." AND it pushed the audience into a rock-like fervor just weeks before Elvis Presley made his debut on Ed Sullivan. Learn a bit about Duke's key band members and how one audience member played an integral role in the show's success.
And also why all this makes Robert think of Charlie Chaplin's last silent film.
Talked about in the video:
"Take the A Train," Duke Ellington
"Moon Indigo, "Duke Ellington
"It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got Swing)," Duke Ellington
"Stairway to Heaven," Led Zeppelin
"Eruption," Van Halen
"Hotel California," Eagles
"Freebird," Lynyrd Skynyrd
"City Lights," Charlie Chaplin
"Duke at Newport," Duke Ellington
