Metellus Numidicus was one of the foremost Roman politicians during the 100's and 90's. He defined what it meant to be an aristocratic conservative and a man of virtue for the last few generations of the Republic. However, he is best known for his role in the war against Jugurtha and his relationship with Gaius Marius, whose career and reforms forever changed the Roman Republic. In fact, it is possible that it was the failure of Marius' relationship with his former friend and mentor Metellus which caused Marius to turn his back on the Senate.
