Juana of Castile is remembered by history as “Juana the Mad,” a label that has followed her for five centuries and conveniently explained why she spent most of her adult life confined and excluded from power. But that explanation collapses under closer inspection.
This episode is not a traditional biography and it’s not an attempt to diagnose Juana from a distance. Instead, it’s a closer look at how power actually functioned around her. Who controlled access to her? Who recorded her behavior? Who benefited when her emotional responses were reframed as incapacity rather than resistance?
Juana was Queen of Castile in her own right, yet she was never allowed to rule. Her marriage to Philip of Burgundy, her conflicts with her father Ferdinand, and later the continuation of her confinement under her own son, Charles V, reveal a pattern that has little to do with illness and everything to do with political convenience. Over time, isolation became policy, and policy became proof.
