Nigerians have reacted with outrage after the Senate rejected a key amendment to the Electoral Act that would have made electronic transmission of election results mandatory.
Following the backlash, the Senate President offered what many Nigerians describe as an embarrassing defense, insisting that lawmakers merely retained the old provision of the law which allows the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to decide how election results are collated and transmitted.
The Senate passed the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Amendment Bill 2026 after its third reading but rejected the proposed amendment to Clause 60, Subsection 3.
The rejected amendment would have compelled INEC presiding officers to electronically transmit polling unit results in real time to the IReV portal immediately after Form EC8A was signed and stamped.
Instead, the Senate adopted the existing provision stating that results shall be transmitted “in a manner as prescribed by the Commission.”
Critics argue that this decision opens the door for election manipulation, while supporters claim INEC needs flexibility due to infrastructure and security challenges.
