Описание: Meet artists from South Florida and beyond who are creating works that are functional and fantastical. From abstracted painted portraits, to playful works in ceramic, to handmade pottery and hand painted signs, these artists take the everyday to the next level.

First, meet artist Jared McGriff in a film presented by ICA Miami. Jared is a Miami-based painter who focuses on reflecting human emotion through abstracted portrait paintings. He can often be found biking the streets of Miami to observe communities and people across neighborhoods. His works build on a mark making technique that is fueled by a combination of memories, personal experiences, and his imagination.

Next, we head to Club Gallery in Little River for a retrospective with artist and arts administrator, Mindy Shrago. Mindy might be best known in South Florida as the founder of Young at Art Museum, now in Plantation, Florida. Mindy has also had a long career as a working artist, creating ceramic and clay works for over 50 years. The exhibit was curated by Zach Spechler, Mindy’s son and an arts fabricator and curator himself. The exhibition, titled “Wish You Were Here,” features hundreds of Mindy’s colorful and joyful works. She plays with the “tackiness” and color of the South Florida landscapes. The works range from hyper-realistic ceramic foods to large-scale 3D puzzle piece works to small and meticulously detailed ceramic postcards. A highlight is a wall of brightly colored ceramic ice cream cones. Learn more about Mindy’s approach to art and how her career has
influenced many of the top contemporary artists in Miami.

We visit the home studio of LangWeil pottery in Ohio to learn about artists Sandra Lang and Walter Weil’s handmade pottery process. The couple crafts pottery works ranging from functional mugs to decorative objects. They explain the varied techniques they draw from, including the Japanese Korean technique of Raku.

As part of the Fountainhead residency, 3 distinct artists are at work. Artist Rashawn Griffin reflects the relationship between himself and the world around him in colorful pieces. Visual artist Joaquin Segura creates work that explores the concepts of history, power, and ideology. And multimedia artist Ruth Patir considers gender paradigms and power relations though a combination of historical artifacts with animation and 3D simulations.

Finally, take a trip to Tampa Bay to meet painter Jeff Williams of Sun Signs. Jeff has built a hand painted sign business that has left its mark all over town. He reflects on his journey and his process of creating these bespoke public pieces.
