J. S. Bach BWV 992 played on the historic Arp Schnitger organ from 1701 located in Porto, Portugal. Music performance and video recording by Nenad Leonart, focusing on the first movement "Arioso: Adagio" of the unique "Capriccio sopra la lontananza del suo fratello dilettissimo" written by a young JSB, possibly modeled after the Biblical Sonatas by Johann Kuhnau. The topic of the first mvt is translated to "Friends Gather & Try to Dissuade Him from departing". It is said that Bach performed it at age nineteen when his brother Johann Jacob left, although there is no clear proof of this.
Regardless, this piece of music (I'd rather call it a gem) is written in a very unique style, not very common for Bach, focussing on the rhetoric side of baroque music and definitely invoking strong feelings of nostalgic longing, leaving a bittersweet taste. It is one of my all-time favorites for historical keyboard instruments and I was very fortunate to be able to record it for my upcoming album on this wonderful instrument, which is the best preserved Arp Schnitger organ in the world. (Stay tuned for the full story about it in my next videos – pretty peculiar it ended up in the monastery of São Salvador in Moreira in Porto, Portugal too).
An unbelievable specialty on this small, short-octave Schnitger instrument is the presence of both a 8' and a 4' Holzflöte, which are distributed onto two different manuals and seamlessly merge into each other, allowing for the usage of an additional octave as demonstrated near the ending of the piece.
Many thanks to Henrique Rodrigues for this opportunity and the wonderful care of the instrument, the monastery of São Salvador in Moreira for the permissions, and to Sean Maxwell for the organising and general support, as well as the team. Without you, this wouldn't have been possible.
The recording was made beginning of October 2024. Audio technician was Mattia Manzoni. Video and performance are done by Nenad Leonart (Leonart Studio).
