🔴 Before the 2026 season started, Ferrari made a specific engineering decision. They chose a small turbocharger deliberately, with a clear rationale. Without the MGU-H, a smaller turbo reaches full boost faster, eliminating the lag that could have defined every standing start. Ferrari modelled the advantage and decided the trade-off was worth it. Then the FIA introduced a five-second pre-start procedure. The advantage disappeared. The straight-line penalty stayed. Ferrari spent nine races paying the cost of a rational decision that circumstances had partially invalidated.
Now the second ADUO token is coming — and Ferrari is not just bringing an upgrade. They are reconsidering the fundamental philosophy of the component itself. The confirmed changes: revised blade count, revised blade angle, advanced materials. The impeller diameter may remain unchanged or Ferrari may go further and adopt a larger unit entirely, abandoning the smaller turbo that defined the SF-26 from the start. That decision is still being made. But the target is not ambiguous. Power parity with Mercedes.
Here is what makes this more significant than any previous Ferrari engine story. The second token is not arriving on a car searching for competitive form. It arrives on top of an aerodynamic package that has already won two races, a deployment philosophy Leclerc confirmed works on every single circuit, and 15kW of additional straight-line performance found at Silverstone. Ferrari's total deficit is 40-45 horsepower. The two ADUO phases together target 30. That leaves 10-15 remaining — which is the difference between needing external circumstances to win and being able to win without them.
The timing is Zandvoort or Monza. Two circuits at opposite ends of the spectrum medium-high downforce Netherlands, lowest-downforce Italy. Monza is where engine performance converts most directly into lap time. Ferrari arriving at their home race with a turbocharger that closes the gap to 10-15 horsepower is a Ferrari the paddock has not yet seen in 2026. And the deployment strategy that held energy through Silverstone's corners and released it on the Hangar Straight — producing Ferrari's first speed trap advantage of the season amplifies the turbo gain further. The two things compound, not simply add.
The speed trap data from the first lap of Zandvoort free practice will tell you everything. 🔔
