This album is a coming together of professionals, and in saying this, it is not intended to suggest that we have music that is just boringly competent. Carney and Marshall add the beef at all tempos and there is not a flaccid moment on the record. Cables' original Helen's Song is a good theme and the general choice of material is appropriate. Sky/ark, Giant Steps and Summertime get especially fine treatment, and the latter in particular will remind older readers of the Andrew Hille style of arrangements.
Forman, who impressed many people when he came to England with Richie Cole, plays well throughout, although special mention should be made of his solos on Sunny Side and Summertime. Hutcherson works Skylark and Giant Steps with a craftsman's hand and Cables has some pertinent things to say on Circular and Desert Rains. Check this one out.
