Throughout my career, I have completed more than 75 ultramarathons ranging from 50 to 444 kilometers. In addition, I’ve helped hundreds of my trainees successfully prepare for ultra races. From this experience, I’ve learned that completing 100 kilometers isn’t just about physical readiness—it’s about a smart and thorough approach to preparation. Here are the most important recommendations:

1️⃣ Gear
Your gear must be tested in all conditions: rain, heat, cold. Nothing should rub, pinch, or cause discomfort. Your shoes need to fit perfectly—not too big, not too small. Everything you plan to wear during the race should be thoroughly tested beforehand so you can focus on running, not fixing problems.

2️⃣ Leg Strength
Your muscles, ligaments, and tendons need to be prepared for prolonged stress. Without strengthening exercises, the risk of injury increases. If something starts hurting during the race, the pain will likely get worse and could force you to drop out. Strengthening your legs is a crucial part of your preparation.

3️⃣ Mental Preparation
Long training sessions in different weather conditions build not only physical endurance but also mental resilience. An ultramarathon is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Train your mind to push through discomfort by showing up for workouts even when you don’t feel like it. Teach yourself that you are in control—but always listen to your body and avoid overtraining.

These three points form the foundation of a successful ultramarathon. Of course, endurance training, technique, and strategy—whether on roads or trails—are also important, but it all starts with reliable gear, strong legs, and mental preparation.

Train wisely, approach your preparation with care, and let your first 100-kilometer race be the beginning of an incredible journey!
