To accurately, and safely, replicate tests the engineers at the University of Southern Queensland used a hydraulic press pump to apply downward force onto the truss.
They recorded this force in ‘newtons’, a unit of measurement often used for stating safety holding values in the building industry. As a guide, roughly every 10,000 Newtons of pressure is equivalent to 1 Tonne (1,000 Kilograms) or the weight of a baby humpback whale, saltwater crocodile or a 1979 Volkswagen Beetle.
Measurements were recorded using strain gauges (the grey wires attached to the truss) and a specialised iMetrum camera that used markings (the ‘+’ symbols) placed on the truss to feed displacement data for the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. With this in place, the engineers at USQ can calculate how much the truss bends, twists and strains under various loads.
