Realism is one of the most influential and enduring theories in International Relations. It explains world politics in terms of power, national interest, and survival. Realists believe that the international system is anarchic, meaning there is no central authority above states to enforce rules or maintain order.
According to realism, states are the primary and most important actors in international politics. Each state acts in a rational manner to maximize its national interest, which is mainly defined in terms of power and security. Because states cannot fully trust one another, conflict and competition are considered natural and unavoidable features of international relations.
