Hey there, neighbor. It's Kevin here with etrailer, and today we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty trailer brake controller here in our 2021 Jeep Gladiator. So if you own a Gladiator and you plan on towing a trailer that's gonna weigh over 3,000 pounds or any trailer that has brakes on it, you're gonna need to have a trailer brake controller so that way whenever you step on the brakes in your vehicle, you can actuate the brakes on the trailer as well. This is gonna be a legal requirement in a lot of states and overall is there to help with the overall safety when you're making those trips from point A to point B. Now there are a lot of options when it comes to trailer brake controllers, but for the Jeep Gladiator, there is only one that I'd highly recommend and that is gonna be from REDARC. And that is because all of the components are gonna be hidden inside of our dash instead of out up against the outside of the dash to where now it's gonna be interfering with the little bit of room that we have in this compact Jeep.
Now your traditional knee-knocker-style trailer brake controllers would've to live pretty much right here. There really wouldn't be another spot to actually mount it up to, and that's gonna obviously be in the way of your knees, which is why they call it a knee-knocker. Now when it comes to the REDARC, all you have to do is make sure that you have enough space behind whichever piece of paneling you wanna mount this up to just about three inches roughly so that way you can actually get the controller piece on there and then also your wiring hooked up to it. And if you look, I've hidden mine right here next to our parking brake so that way it kind of blends in with the rest of the center console so that way it looks nice and factory. And it's super easy to reach in case they need to adjust the settings on here, maybe turn the gain up a little bit.
Or if they're experiencing a sway event, they can easily just press on it and activate the manual override, bringing the trailer behind them so that it's tracking straight. Now there are gonna be three different versions of the Tow-Pro. And there's gonna be the Liberty, which is the one we installed today with that red box. There's also going to be a Trail version and an Elite version. And the Elite and the Trail are pretty much the same thing.
They're both gonna have a little bit of a step up over the Liberty itself. Now Liberty is gonna be good for up to two axles, which is exactly what you should be towing with this trailer. It's a single, or with this vehicle, you really shouldn't be getting into any kind of triple axle action. That'd be where you're wanting to switch up to maybe the Elite. Or if you're really wanting to kind of fine-tune and dial in those brake settings whenever you are out on a trail or something like that and you're kind of rock crawling, maybe something like that, and you want to keep that trailer behind you and really lock those brakes up, get that grip, that's where the Trail version of this would really come into play so that way you can sit there and customize it to exactly what you need.
Whereas with this one, you just have that zero to 10 gain setting, and that's really about it aside from the manual override. So like I was saying, this dial is super simple to use. You're gonna wanna just probably start out at the five, but if you look at it, we will turn it all the way counterclockwise to get down to the zero. As we turn it clockwise, that's just gonna keep raising that gain. You can see it goes in increments of 2, 2, 4, 6, 8, all the way up to 10 with your odds being those little dashes in between. Like I said, I usually find myself right around five or six just depending on the weight I'm pulling. But obviously that's gonna vary depending on what exactly you're doing. Aside from that, you'll just want to press in on it if you want to activate that manual override. And you can see it changes from a blue to a purple up to a dark dark red there, or deep red I should say. And honestly that's about it. There really isn't much to this. Like I said, it's super easy to work. If there is any kind of issues with it, that light right there is gonna blink different colors. And if you
