Training Assignment
Assignment : Shoot a one-minute short film in one take with max two characters without dialogues. Sound can be manipulated.
One minute short film -
Title - “Good Night”
The core - “Ephemerality Of Life”
Synopsis - The film tells a story of a middle class man who is worn-out, sleep deprived and living away from the family, whose life takes a turn when a mosquito enters his house. The film has been shot from the POV of the mosquito.
Scene 1 -
A mosquito is sitting on the channels of a french window. A storm disturbs its peace and it flies inside the house, finds a place under a pillow of a sofa in the hall of 1BHK.
(A storm indicates the arrival of calamity upon someone hence the title “good night” indicates a warning/conflict. The flight of the mosquito shows 1bhk of a middle class person. 1 bhk setup and props indicates family which is not there that time and someone must be staying alone)
Scene 2 -
As the mosquito sits quietly in the corner of the sofa, we get to know about the person living in the house using the dimension of the sound. We hear a phone call indicating that the person has got a call from someone (may be a family member asking about well-being or how was the day) The person walks barefoot towards the phone and cuts it. May be its not right time to talk. The person hears sound of storm. He/she closes the window. The person gives a sigh (may be out of extreme fatigue) and rests on the sofa.
The mosquito sensing an opportunity, tries to attack and bite the person on the leg. The person tries to shoo away the mosquito using the other foot but it doesnt work. Tension is raised to the peak as the troubled person gets highly irritated by the mosquito. The person(now we see a middle aged man) gets up to kill the mosquito.
Scene 3 -
The man finds a rod and raises it to kill it. His heart starts pounding oddly. He suffers a heart attack and falls on the floor with the rod. The life is so ephemeral! Insead of a mosquito, the man is struggling with life. Suddenly we see his hand for a brief moment indicating that maybe there is still hope for him. The ambulance is arriving for him or just passing by is not sure. Whether the man lives or not, the mosquito survives that night indicating a conflict in the name “Good Night” as it is a name of a mosquito repellent.
The film ends with a disclaimer that no insect was harmed during the filming.
Irony - In films, it is mandatory to make sure that the animals are not harmed during filming and there are organizations to make sure that. In reality, there is no value of a human’s life and no one is held accountable although hundreds of lives are lost in a day.
