Growing up in the early 1900s - Going to School
What was life like for ordinary working-class children living in the suburbs or on the fringes of Australian cities in the early 1900s? How different or similar was their day to yours? Step into the shoes of the Youngein children, Jim and Dolly, from Susannah Place Sydney and find out how they lived. What grade are you in? What will you do once you graduate from primary school? This may seem like a silly question as all of you will go on to high school, but in the early 1900s, many children left school when they were 12 or 13 and started working. If you were to finish formal schooling after primary school to help support your family, what do you think you would do? What sort of jobs were available to children when they graduated from primary school in the early 1900s? Find out what Jim Youngein did when he finished primary school, then see if you can find out what some of the other children of that time went on to do for work.
