in todays video we are working on a Norway spruce. a rescued tree that was donated to the workshop early on in the year. the tree had a huge aphid and ants infestation and weak growth amd if left any longer the tree would have ended up as an old stick. After giving it the right care the tree recovered and responded well. we then place some wire to tidy up the tree and to make it easy lier for its 1st styling (this video)
now to the channels mentioned in the video.
we have Andy from @Bonsaicrazy
and
Dan from @thebonsaiprojectkernow
definitely worth checking those guys out.
now for more care tips on Norway spruce then please read more below
Sunlight: Norway spruce bonsai thrives in full sunlight. Place it where it can receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the topsoil feels slightly dry, and ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.
Soil: Use well-draining soil with a mix of organic and inorganic components. A blend of akadama, pumice, and lava rock works well for Norway spruce bonsai.
Temperature and Humidity: These bonsai prefer cool temperatures and high humidity. Protect them from extreme heat and ensure good air circulation. A humidity tray or regular misting can help maintain appropriate humidity levels.
Fertilization: During the growing season (spring to early autumn), fertilize the bonsai every 2-4 weeks with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the dormant winter period.
Pruning: Regular pruning is essential for shaping and maintaining the bonsai's size. Prune new growth in early spring and pinch back candles to encourage branching.
Wiring: Use wiring carefully to shape the branches, but avoid constricting the growth. Remove wires before they cut into the bark.
Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for pests like aphids and spider mites. Treat any infestations promptly. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
Repotting: Repot the Norway spruce bonsai every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and encourage healthy root growth. Spring is usually the best time for repotting.

Remember that each bonsai is unique, so observe your tree regularly and adjust care based on its specific needs and responses.
Training: Norway spruce bonsai responds well to wiring and styling. Shape its structure gradually, avoiding drastic changes to prevent stress. Be patient, as these trees develop slowly.
Leaf Pruning: To reduce needle size and improve ramification, perform leaf pruning during the growing season. Trim back the new shoots, leaving just a few pairs of needles.
By integrating these care tips into your routine, you'll be well on your way to cultivating a healthy and aesthetically pleasing Norway spruce bonsai.
