In Cuba, there was a complete shutdown of the electrical power system as a result of the failure of the local thermal power plant in Matanzas, the country's authorities report.
The massive outage left millions of Cubans without power and prompted the government to implement emergency measures to slash demand, including suspending classes, shutting down some state-owned workplaces and canceling nonessential services.
The main reason for what happened was the strengthening of US sanctions against Cuba, which prevent the import of fuel and other necessary resources.
Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz attributed the crisis to aging infrastructure and fuel shortages exacerbated by Hurricane Milton.
