Are you recording a video interview remotely through Zoom? Do you have a podcast and want to record your interviews in high-quality using Zoom? If you do, watch this video because I’m going to show you how to set up your Zoom settings so you get the best video.

First thing to do is open up Zoom and go to preferences or settings, and go to the Video tab. Click on the original ratio box to prevent your video being warped but if you are using an external camera, you may need to toggle this so see which view looks best for you. Next, click on the HD box so you can record in 720p.

Next is to choose your camera. You can either purchase a webcam that connects through a USB connection, or use a video capture card so you can connect your mirrorless, DSLR, or cinema camera - this is what I do. Either way, you can’t get 1080 video or HD quality from a low-level camera. You need a camera that can output 1080p or 4k, and can connect to your computer.

Select to touch up your appearance and adjust for low light if you don’t have lighting and need to brighten the image in a dark setting.

Next go to the advanced tab, then click on optimize video quality with de-noise so you have a smoother looking image and use hardware acceleration for receiving video so that you have enough power to stream and record high-quality video.

Now it’s time for sound. It’s best to use a mic outside of your internal mic on your device. You can use your airpods or a headset. The next step up is using a professional mic with an external sound card, which I use for podcast interviews. Unclick automatically adjust microphone volume if you are going to mix your own sound and use the meter here to adjust your levels.

Next, click on Music and Professional audio and click on show in-meeting option to enable “original sound” and click on High-fidelity music if you’re capturing music. Uncheck echo cancellation if you are using headphones, and check stereo audio if you want to capture stereo sound. For podcast interviews or video interviews, I don’t use echo cancellation because I use headphones. Click on Stereo if it’s just one person with a good mic and uncheck it if it’s more people who don’t have great mics, because this option will increase the bandwidth usage and may slow down the Zoom application.

Next, go to the recording tab and choose a folder to save the files. You will be recording to your computer so you get the raw files and best quality so choose a place with enough harddrive space. Click choose recording when meeting ends just in case you want to save to an external hd. Also, check Record separate audio files so you can split the audio files for each participant, which is great for sound mixing. Next, click on Optmize for 3rd party video editor so you get video files that are in the best format for video editing. Also click Record video during screen sharing if you plan to share your screen.

Next, go to the General tab, and click on View more settings. Then go to the meeting tab, and scroll down to turn on enable group HD so you can Activate higher quality video for host and participants.

Now it’s time to open up Zoom. Remember to choose your mic and video settings to your external mic and camera if you’re using them. And then, press record and Record locally to your computer so you can get the best quality, but remember to have more than 10gb of space on your harddrive so you have enough room for your video files and your computer won’t crash. To get the best resolution, capture interviews in Presenter or full screen mode and pin the person you want to capture to get maximum resolution. Use gallery mode if you want to capture everyone on screen like for podcasts and panels.

Once you are done, you can either press the square or stop button to stop recording or end the meeting and it will stop the recording for you.

It will then take time to convert the video so do not cancel this dialog box! Once that’s done, you can choose where to save your file.

Then you can open up that folder and see that your video is in an Mp4 format and your audio is in separate files. And that’s it!
