Your flight is cancelled late in the evening. Who pays for the hotel?
In Europe (EU261), the airline must provide meals and a hotel when you're stuck, whatever caused the disruption, even a storm. Compensation of €250 to €600 is different: it's only due if the airline caused the problem.
In the US, no law requires meals or hotels. Airlines make their own commitments, published on the US DOT dashboard, and they apply when the disruption is "controllable", like crew or maintenance problems. From February 1, 2027, ten causes, including urgent unscheduled maintenance, no longer count as the airline's responsibility in US delay statistics.
Tip: ask why your flight was disrupted, and keep your receipts.
