In March 2012, Barry Nelson was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer and given a life expectancy of six months. Having exhausted treatment options, he enrolled in an immunotherapy clinical trial for a PD-1 checkpoint inhibitor, pembrolizumab. His tumors shrank and he was once again able to lead a happy, productive life.
