I went on an overnight motorcycle ride to circumnavigate the headwaters of the Salmon River in Northern California. I had read that this remote region has a narrow paved one-lane road heading west from the small settlement of Callahan to the Forks of the Salmon, and then back east to the small town of Etna. The road has a reputation as a version of the famous Bolivian Death Road due to numerous blind curves, steep drop-offs into the river, and a narrow single-vehicle roadway, even though it is a 2-way road connecting a few small settlements.
I was curious to explore this remote region to see if the road lived up to the hype. Join me on this overnighter to the Salmon River headwaters. Is this a death road for motorcyclists?
