Start to Finish build of a 1974 Harley Davidson 440 vintage snowmobile

Описание: Start to finish restoration of a 1974 Harley Davidson 440 vintage snowmobile. Built from scraps - when I bought this sled all the parts came in boxes and I had to figure it all out. I knew this project would be hard but I didn't realize how hard it would be!

The first priority was to get the motor in good working order. And I wanted this to be a motor that I can count on for many years, so I knew a complete rebuild is what I wanted to do. I quickly found out that I was missing a piston and rings, along with a scored cylinder. I found out how hard it was to come across these! The piston is unique to only the '74/'75 Harley sled. 1971 - 1973 had a different piston. Because of the unique piston skirt design and chrome cylinder walls I could not simply bore out the cylinder and find aftermarket pistons. Thankfully Greg from upstate New York was able to hook me up!

I had my crank rebuilt by Bracebridge Machine. I was able to find new rods on eBay and Bracebridge Machine changed the bearing design on the PTO side. They did a great job but it wasn't without headaches. They found that my original crank shaft was junk and I was needing a new shaft and fractured bearings. Turns out a scrap motor I found at JT Powersports had all the parts I need!

I decided I want a custom seat design to be a show piece on the sled. I turned to Marlee Upholstery for the job. I hand selected a carbon fibre vinyl material and got "Harley Davidson" embroidered on the back. I absolutely love the way it turned out!

The original track was in Ok shape, but I knew that I really wanted an upgrade. I turned to GBDistribution, out of Quebec, for their awesome 18" wide track with a 1" lug. What I huge upgrade! I saved on shipping by meeting them at Sledarama in Peterborough.

I was a struggle to free up the components in the skid and replace the drive cogs. But I did it! I will have many years of riding on this new track/skid setup.

I am truly happy with how this sled turned out! Ever since I saw a Harley Davidson snowmobile I always wanted one. I just thought it was so cool. Now I can ride my Harley in multiple vintage rides!
