I don’t see many live videos of Kenny Rankin from back in the late ‘70s so here’s a recording I made from TV on the first VCR I owned. I'm surprised at how good the sound quality is from the videotape. I saw him open for Robert Klein in Manhattan in the early ‘80s and then saw him in the late ‘80s at our WOR-TV studio when I was working there.
Kenny goes way back, having been a guitarist on Bob Dylan’s 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home. Starting in 1972, he was often the opening act or musical guest for George Carlin's live performances. They toured together intermittently for nearly ten years. Kenny sang at George Carlin's memorial service in June 2008. He died of lung cancer the following year in June 2009.
