Foston – “Fotr’s Farmstead”

This one surprised me a little bit. On the map, if you take one look at the village of Foston, just West of the A64, you’d likely think there’s nothing there. True, it only has two streets and not very much in the way of housing, but this one is a classic case of a village whose detail lies within what you can’t see, or at least not very easily. It might only be a tiny speck on the Yorkshire landscape now, but several centuries ago, Foston was a very important village.

It was at least three times the size of its current incarnation, because there was a moated monastic grange here that had jurisdiction over land not only in Foston, but also in Terrington, Thornton le Clay, Huntington and Flaxton. A massive area! By 1167, Foston had been granted to St Mary's Abbey in York by Count Stephen of Albemarle.

Nothing remains of the grange, or the other buildings that would have been central to its cause, but there are earthworks all over the place. Most are on private land, but sections of this walk reveal a few. Its thought the only building left from those days is All Saints Church which retains some early 12th century fabric. In much later times, Foston was the home of the acclaimed English writer Sydney Smith who was also the rector from 1806 until 1829.

So in essence, less is more here. Let’s go exploring!
