High energy prices, volatile grids and growing pressure to decarbonize are confronting businesses and facility operators with a key question: How can energy be managed flexible, efficient and simultaneously cost-effectively in the future?
The European research project FlexBIT is producing intelligent solutions that will make energy systems in residential, commercial and industry buildings more flexible, more efficient and more sustainable. It centers around a digital platform that uses artificial intelligence to analyze energy requirements proactively and automation to optimize power flows and advanced storage systems. Among other things, these include HT-PEM fuel cells and vehicle-to-grid systems that can reinject stored power into the grid as needed.
Another component is the use of blockchain technologies to organize power flows in so-called energy communities reliably, transparently and verifiably. Fraunhofer IFF is particularly focusing on developing, integrating and field testing these energy management systems for industrial applications, including testing them in real-world pilot environments and refining them for real-world use.
