Today, let's discuss a topic that many of you may have experienced: The Narcissist Is Watching You. You might have noticed that they have suddenly stopped communicating with you, or perhaps they have ghosted you entirely. It’s important to understand that this silence often means they have retreated to a place where they feel safe.
Narcissists can feel threatened by people who are considered "Chosen Ones," especially empaths. In contrast, narcissists often live in a world of lies and deception. When they go silent or disappear, it is frequently because they find it easier to move on and start anew somewhere else—perhaps in a different city or with new people—rather than continue dealing with you. This is a key reason why they ghost others and choose to remain quiet.
One of the main issues is that narcissists often lack the vocabulary to express their feelings or provide the answers you may be seeking. They do not want to offer you closure, and by not doing so, they hope to keep you emotionally tied to them. This can lead to a situation where you find it difficult to move on.
During this time of silence, they do not simply disappear. Instead, they often retreat to a place where they can observe you from a distance. If you are active on social media, they may still be watching your posts and updates. You might think, "I’ve blocked them," but keep in mind that they can create new accounts or use different methods to reach out to you. Even if you believe you have cut off contact, they might still find ways to stay connected, whether directly or indirectly.
It is also important to understand that narcissists often keep items from their past relationships. Just like a criminal might keep trophies from their crimes, a narcissist may hold onto small belongings that remind them of you. These could be anything from a piece of jewelry to personal items like headphones. In my own experience, I encountered a situation where a narcissist attempted to take a cherished item that belonged to my late mother. This incident happened during their retreat to their so-called place of safety.
I refer to it as a "place of safety" because, when they are confronted or challenged, they feel vulnerable. The longer they spend time with someone who can see through their facade, the more they feel the pressure. The cracks in their carefully constructed mask become more visible, and they find it increasingly difficult to maintain control over the situation.
