I forgot to reiterate what I've covered in previous videos about Fargesia dracocephala 'Rufa'. While some other members of the Fargesia genus are cold hardy to zones 5 and 6, the other species are NOT heat tolerant!
Fargesia is a Himalayan genus. While other Fargesia species in the genus can withstand cold winter temperatures, they will NOT endure the summer heat and humidity of the midwest US summers even when planted in full shade.
Most species in the genus are better suited to the Pacific Northwest and the New England states where hot, humid summers aren't typical as they are here in the midwest.
It's important to understand that zones 5 and 6 are not the same across the US. Those ratings only classify minimum winter temperatures. Summer weather conditions are important to take into consideration when planting heat sensitive plants.
Although 'Rufa' is an exception within its genus when it comes to its tolerance of heat, humidity, and sun, it's a very small and slow growing species.
