The CBP Structured Interview can be one of the most nerve-wracking parts of the hiring process for Customs and Border Protection applicants. Recently, one of my coaching clients, who successfully passed this challenging interview, shared his best tips for future applicants. His insight is especially valuable because it comes from someone who has sat in that seat, faced the panel, and walked away with a passing score.

His first piece of advice is to practice your behavioral answers using real-life examples. The structured interview format relies heavily on the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Without practice, many applicants tend to ramble or leave out critical details that the panel is looking for.

Second, he emphasized the importance of understanding the CBP mission. The panel wants to see that you are committed to the agency’s values—integrity, vigilance, and service to country. My client researched CBP’s role in border security, trade enforcement, and immigration before his interview, which helped him connect his experiences directly to their mission.

Third, he advised staying calm under pressure. During his interview, he was asked a complex situational judgment question about handling a difficult traveler. He took a deep breath, thought through his STAR method structure, and gave a concise answer that showed judgment, professionalism, and adherence to policy.

He also reminded future candidates to review the CBP core competencies. Knowing what skills CBP is evaluating—decision-making, emotional control, communication—allows you to tailor your answers to highlight those strengths.

Lastly, he warned against memorizing scripted answers. Instead, he prepared multiple real scenarios from his past that demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and integrity. This allowed his answers to sound natural while still hitting all the scoring points.

If you’re preparing for your CBP Structured Interview, my premium coaching program will walk you through mock questions, provide feedback on your STAR responses, and help you avoid the mistakes that cause many applicants to fail.
